Slabs listed on this page include several unique materials, including soapstone, sandstone, and schist. Soapstone is a talc-based material with the hardness of your fingernail. Because talc is non-acid reactive, this stone is commonly used in labs as worktables. Sandstone is a sedimentary stone, often characterized by graininess and porosity. Schist is a metamorphic category of stone whose large grains form in a sheetlike layers, making its function similar to that of slate.
